What Is a Plate and Frame Filter Press?
A plate and frame filter press is one of the most widely used machines for solid-liquid separation in industrial filtration. It works by feeding slurry under pressure into a series of alternating filter plates and hollow frames, where the liquid passes through the filter medium while solid particles are retained as filter cake. Simple in design yet extremely effective, the plate and frame filter press delivers high cake dryness, excellent filtrate clarity and low operating costs.
Structure of a Plate and Frame Filter Press
The core structure of a plate and frame filter press consists of three main groups: the fixed head plate, the movable tail plate, and a set of filter plates and frames suspended on two side beams. The filter cloth is laid over each plate, and the frames provide the chamber space for cake accumulation. A hydraulic system closes the plate pack under high pressure to seal every chamber, while a feed pump delivers slurry into the machine at controlled pressure. When filtration is complete, the hydraulic cylinder opens the pack and the cake is discharged, either manually plate by plate or automatically by a plate shifter.
Key Advantages of Plate and Frame Filter Presses
- High filtration efficiency: multi-chamber design provides a large filtration area in a compact footprint.
- Excellent cake dryness: high feed pressure produces dense, low-moisture filter cake that is easy to handle and dispose of.
- Superior filtrate clarity: the plate and frame arrangement delivers exceptionally clean filtrate for reuse or discharge.
- Flexible operation: available as a manual plate frame filter press for small batches or a fully automatic system for continuous production.
- Chemical and thermal resistance: polypropylene plates withstand aggressive acids, alkalis and high operating temperatures.
Industrial Applications of Plate and Frame Filter Presses
Plate and frame filter presses are trusted across heavy industries. In the chemical industry, they are used for pigment washing, catalyst recovery, titanium dioxide filtration and fine chemical clarification. In metallurgy and mining, they dewater concentrates and tailings, recover valuable metals from leaching slurry, and handle acid mine drainage. Other typical applications include electroplating wastewater treatment, food and beverage clarification, edible oil refining, ceramic and kaolin processing, and municipal sludge dewatering.
Manual & Automatic Plate and Frame Filter Press Models
GINCHE offers both manual plate frame filter presses and fully automatic models to match every production scale. Manual machines are economical and ideal for small to medium capacity plants where operators manually shift plates during cake discharge. Automatic plate and frame filter press models add hydraulic plate shifting, cloth washing systems and PLC-controlled cycles, enabling unattended, round-the-clock industrial filtration with consistent results.
All GINCHE plate and frame filter presses are engineered for long service life, easy maintenance and worldwide compatibility. Contact our filtration engineers for sizing, quotation and technical support.
